High values of sulfuric dioxide (SO2) are now measured in Höfn in Hornafjörður and the surrounding area, in the Eastfjords of Iceland. Measurements show that SO2 is between 9.000 and 21.000 micrograms per cubic meter. The Department of Civil Protection has sent out text messages to mobile phones in the area. Civil Protection urges the…
From the Icelandic Met Office: Today (Thursday) gas pollution from the eruption will affect areas in the northern part of Iceland. Tomorrow (Friday) pollution can be expected in the areas north and east of the eruption. The Gas Dispersion Forecast can be read on this web link. On the same site, here, you can find…
The eruption in Holuhraun has been active for 50 days, but it started on the 31 of August. The eruption continues at a similar intensity as before and lava production is steady. Now the size of the lavafield is around 60 km2 as shown on the map below.
Today (Sunday), gas pollution can be expected in the NE of Iceland. Tomorrow (Monday) the pollution will move to the east and later southeast of the eruption site. We are expecting the first real snowstorm this autumn on Monday morning, especially in the north. The weather forecast for Sunday is fair with some rain, but…
This morning the gas pollution from Holuhraun has been mostly towards the northeast of the volcano. SMS warning messages were sent to all mobile phones in the area of Jökuldalur around noon, since the SO2 values were measured quite high. Handheld gas detectors that have been in use around Iceland, measured increased concentration of SO2 in the northeast and southeast of the country, especially in Borgarfjörður eystri and…
The daily forcast on gas pollution is issued by the Met Office. Today and tomorrow the pollution is expected southwest of the volcano. Forcast tomorrow – large image. A new simulation is beeing developed (Calpuff). The latest simulation can be accessed here nýjustu keyrslu http://www.vedur.is/vedur/spar/textaspar/oskufok/
The picture below is taken by MODIS satellite at 03:46 tonight. The red colour shows a heat deviation and the white colour maximum heat radiation. According to scientists in the field the lava flow did cross the track into Holuhraun tonight. The lava field is growing to north east. The picture is compiled and published…
The Department of Civil Protection is now participating in the annual meeting of FutureVolc research project in Bifrost, Borgarfjordur, Iceland. FutureVolc is a 26-partner project funded by FP7 Environment Programme of the European Commission, addressing topic “Long-term monitoring experiment in geologically active regions of Europe prone to natural hazards: the Supersite concept”. The project started…
The Icelandic Met Office measures SO2 at the eruption site and issues daily forecast on SO2 concentration in the atmosphere based on SO2 measurements and weather conditions. This is a link for the spread forecast (in Icelandic language): 2 days spread forecast There are 2 maps that show forecast for current day (green spread area) and for the next day (pink…
The Icelandic Met Office mesasures SO2 at the eruption site and issues daily forecast on SO2 concentration in the atmosphere based on SO2 measurements and weather conditions. Today the forecast of Sulphur dioxide (SO2) concentration is high in the vicinity of the eruption and surrounding area. The pollution can be expected to move towards Hofsjökull and Tungnárjökull to the south,…
