Temporary restrictions for scientists and media lifted at Holuhraun

The District Commissioner in Húsavík has, in cooperation with the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police, decided to lift the temporary restrictions on traffic in the eruption area North of Vatnajökull for scientists and journalist with special permissions.

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management reiterates that all other traffic in the area north of Vatnajökull glacier is prohibited. All unauthorized traffic will be reported to the police.

Administration of Occupational Safety and Health of Iceland has issued an announcement stressing that working in the vicinity of volcanic activity is dangerous with respect to toxic gases, flying minerals, temperature, potential flooding as well as other factors. It is the responsibility of companies to ensure that their employees working under those conditions have protective equipment, measuring instruments and knowledge in accordance with the AOSHI recommendations. The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management stresses that the eruption site is not monitored with consideration to flooding. Therefore people is warned from being at the site after darkness.
