The lava now covers an area over 17 square kilometers

The lava in Holuhraun now covers an area over 17 square kilometers. The volume of the lava is estimated to be around 120 million cubic meters. The picture below shows the fresh lava compared to the Reykjavík area. The other pictures shows the the lava on location in Holuhraun.

Photos of the rift valley, graben, in Holuhraun

The photos below show the rift valley, graben, in Holuhraun. The two volcanic fissures in Holuhraun are located in the rift, which stretches from underneath Dyngjujökull. The rift is above the dyke that started to thrust from the Bárðarbunga caldera on 16. August 2014.

Scientists and civil protection representatives flew over the eruption site in Holuhraun and Dyngjujökull today. Three cauldrons were detected in Dyngjujökull. Traffic surveillance in the area north of Vatnajökull glacier

The Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management reiterates that all traffic in the area north of Vatnajökull glacier is prohibited.
